Wood by the sea: protecting terraces, furniture and boats from salt air
The marine climate is among the most aggressive for wood: here is how to tackle it with the right product

Anyone who lives or spends their holidays by the sea knows a problem that people living inland do not have to face: salt air. Air saturated with salt microparticles speeds up the deterioration of almost every exposed material, and wood is no exception — in fact, it is among the materials most sensitive to this combination of intense sun, humidity and salt.
Why the marine climate is more aggressive
Compared with a normal environment, the marine climate combines three aggressive factors at once: generally more intense UV exposure, often amplified by reflection off the water, high and constant humidity, and the presence of salt, which speeds up degradation and can encourage mould growth. Wood treated with a standard product tends to show the first signs of failure much more quickly near the sea.
The product designed for this: Stork Flatting Marine Varnish
Stork Flatting Marine Varnish (61.607) is a superfine clear flatting varnish with high gloss, elasticity and weather resistance. It is not a product adapted for marine use: it was created specifically for it, as its long-standing use in protecting wooden items and boats shows — a setting with no margin for error, because exposure is at its maximum and constant.
Where it is used, besides boats
Although the name recalls the world of boating, this product is perfectly suited to any wooden item exposed to a marine climate: sea-view terraces, outdoor furniture near the coast, window frames and wooden structures of seaside homes. Wherever salt air is a daily factor, not an occasional one, this is the protection designed to last.
How to apply it
The product is thinned by 5 to 10% with synthetic thinner. Drying times are longer than for a water-based product, in line with the greater resistance it is designed to offer: at least 4 hours dust-free, 24 hours through-dry, with a minimum of 24 hours before recoating. Besides colourless, it is also available in two colours — Douglas and Pine.
An opportunity to stand out, not just a product
The general-purpose wood varnish market rarely speaks specifically to people who live in or own property in coastal areas, or to the world of wooden boats. It is an audience with a very specific problem, which often settles for generic solutions because it cannot find a clearly communicated alternative.
In summary
A marine climate requires a different level of protection from a standard environment. Stork Flatting Marine Varnish (61.607), originally designed for boating, offers the resistance and elasticity needed to withstand sun, humidity and salt air — on a boat, but also on a terrace or a piece of furniture exposed to the same harsh conditions.
