If there is one product in our range that has attracted more attention than any other this year, it is the High Protection impregnating stain. And that is no accident: it is designed to answer a very simple question — how do I protect my exterior wood without too much worry, for as long as possible?
What it is and how it works
Impregnante Alta Protezione (65.665) is a deep-penetrating, non-yellowing impregnating stain for exterior use, formulated with binders based on acrylic and urethane resins in emulsion and a special blend of UV filters. Unlike a varnish, it does not form a rigid surface film: it penetrates the fibres, nourishes them and leaves the wood breathable, following its natural movements without peeling or cracking.
It has a specific action against mould and blue stain fungus — two of the main causes of aesthetic and structural deterioration in damp or poorly ventilated areas — and it works in depth, not just on the surface.
Where to use it
It is designed for anything that is exposed and needs serious protection: balconies, garage doors, wooden houses, beams, wooden carpentry work. It is the right choice when the item is in direct, continuous contact with the weather, not just occasionally.
A useful and often underestimated feature: it can also be applied over previous finishes based on solvent-based impregnating stains, provided they have been sanded and properly cleaned. If you are renewing an element treated in the past with a different product, you do not have to go back to bare wood: you just need to prepare the surface correctly.
How to apply it
The product is ready to use, with no thinning. The approximate coverage is 6-8 m²/L, so for a medium-sized project — a veranda, a set of garden furniture — a 2.5-litre tin is generally enough for two coats. Drying is fast: about one hour to touch, six hours through, with recoating possible after a minimum of six hours. Weather permitting, a project can be completed within a single day.
Practical tips for a long-lasting result
Always apply at least two coats, observing the stated recoating times: the first coat nourishes the wood in depth, the second builds the final protective layer. Avoid applying the product in full midday sun in summer: drying too quickly can compromise the evenness of the finish. If the wood is new, check that it is well seasoned before treating it: too much residual moisture reduces the effectiveness of penetration.
When to choose another product in the range instead
Alta Protezione is designed mainly for protection, with a good natural-looking result. If you also want a more refined, wax-like effect, or you are working on beams and roof spaces where the risk of runs is higher, Impregnante e Finitura Effetto Cera (65.675) — with its drip-free gel structure — is probably more suitable. If instead you are working on very absorbent or particularly degraded wood, a solvent-based impregnating stain such as Ecologic Legno (62.620) can ensure deeper penetration.
In summary
Impregnante Alta Protezione is currently the most searched-for product in our Linea Legno: deep protection, action against mould and fungi, quick and easy application, and compatibility even with surfaces treated in the past. If your project involves highly exposed exterior wood — balconies, garages, beams — it is the first product to consider.
